The memoirs of this extraordinary businesswoman and mother not only provide an insight into Jewish family life at the time, but are also a unique source of the turbulent early modern period from a Jewish perspective and a collection of traditional stories.
The narrator Christine Lander brings Glikel’s fate to life: Marriages and deaths, gains and losses, marginalisation and threats, plague, war, murder and false messiahs.
The memoirs were translated 200 years later by the Jewish feminist Pappenheim.
In the programme, Christine Lander interweaves insights into Glikl’s biography with the history of the book’s creation and the traditional stories that Glikl wrote down for her descendants to create a colourful portrait of female self-determination.
About: Christine Lander has been a stage storyteller since 2007. Solo, as a bilingual duo or with musicians, she delights her audiences with a wide variety of material. She studied theatre pedagogy at the University of the Arts (MA 2006) and history/South Asian studies at the Humboldt University of Berlin (M.A. 2003). One of her specialisms in storytelling is historical and biographical stories. She has been involved in the Berlin school project ErzählZeit since 2008. She is currently co-curating the “History Theatre” series at the Humboldt Forum. She teaches artistic storytelling at the Berlin University of the Arts, at Erzählkunst e.V. and at the Marburg Summer Academy.
The summer party of the Erzählbühne will take place at the beginning of July, the exact date will be announced. There will be surprise guests, live music and an open stage, plus summery drinks and songs.
